Why is an oil protector necessary for air conditioners?

An oil separator for air conditioners and heat pumps protects the environment by containing leaking oil in case of leaks, thus preventing soil and groundwater contamination. It is required by the German Water Resources Act (WHG) to separate oils from rainwater and collect them safely.

Ester oils belong to the water hazard class WGK 1. Substances of this class are also considered hazardous to water according to the Water Resources Act and must be reliably held back.Furthermore, ester oils can mix with the refrigerant during operation, which can alter their properties and change water law assessment .
